Medicare Rebates:​

Medicare rebates are available for autism assessments for children and adults up to the age of 25 years old under the Medicare item code 135

​​​

Referral Process for Children/Adolescents

​

Step                     What to Do

1                          Visit your GP and request a referral to a paediatrician and a psychologist for an autism assessment.

​​

2                          Send referrals to the psychology clinic and Paediatrician.

​

3                          Book the first appointment. The first session is usually parent-only to gather background and developmental history.                                                                Follow-up sessions may include behavioural assessments, assessments of learning, cognitive abilities, education, and sometimes teacher                              interviews.

​

4                          See the Paediatrician to discuss concerns and have them sign off on the final diagnosis

                            You will also need to see a Speech Pathologist or Occupational Therapist (OT) as part of the full assessment.

Referral Process for Adults (18 - 25)

​

Step                     What to Do

1                          Visit your GP and request a referral to a psychologist for an autism assessment.

​

2                          Send the referral to a psychologist or psychology clinic

​

3                          Book the assessment. You may be asked to complete questionnaires beforehand to help guide the psychologist during the session.

​
